Frequently asked questions

What is choghadiya?

Choghadiya divides the day (sunrise to sunset) and the night (sunset to next sunrise) into eight equal parts each. Every part has a name and a quality, and is used to choose good times for starting things.

Which choghadiya are good and which are bad?

Amrit, Shubh and Labh are considered good. Chal is neutral. Udveg, Rog and Kaal are best avoided for new beginnings.

Why does choghadiya change every day?

The order of the seven names shifts with the weekday, and the length of each part depends on that day's sunrise and sunset in your city.

Can I use choghadiya for travel and purchases?

Many people do: they prefer Amrit, Shubh, Labh or Chal for starting a journey, buying something important or signing papers, and avoid Kaal, Rog and Udveg. For big events, a pandit will also consider the tithi and nakshatra.
