How the planner chooses dates

A muhurat is a time chosen to give a new beginning the best start. We judge each day at its midday (Abhijit) muhurat for the tithi, the Moon's nakshatra and the weekday, using the traditional lists of favourable stars for each activity. Rikta tithis (4th, 9th, 14th) and Amavasya are always skipped.

For marriage and griha pravesh we are stricter: we also skip Kharmas (when the Sun is in Dhanu or Meena) and the days when Venus or Jupiter is combust, as tradition advises.

What it does not do

This is a simplified planner. It does not model Chaturmas, adhik maas or eclipses, and it does not match the date to anyone's personal chart. Please confirm the final date and time with a local pandit, especially for weddings and housewarmings.

Frequently asked questions

Can I check today's panchang and shubh muhurat?

Yes. Today's panchang page shows the Abhijit muhurat, Rahu kaal and choghadiya for your city. This planner looks further ahead for specific activities.

What makes a date auspicious for marriage?

Traditionally a favourable nakshatra (like Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Mula, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada or Revati), a good tithi and weekday, no Rikta tithi, and no Kharmas or combust Venus or Jupiter.

Why does it show fewer dates than other sites?

We use strict classical rules, and we skip periods like Kharmas and combustion of Venus or Jupiter. A shorter list of well-supported dates is more useful than a long list.

Does the planner use my birth chart?

No. It finds generally auspicious days. For a ceremony tied to a person, such as a wedding, a pandit would also check both charts.
