What is a dasha?
In Vedic astrology life is divided into planetary periods called dashas. The most widely used system is Vimshottari, a 120-year cycle shared among nine planets: Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17.
Which planet your life starts with depends on the nakshatra the Moon was in at birth. The main period is the mahadasha. Each is divided into nine sub-periods (antardashas) in the same order, starting with the main planet, and the combination of the two lords tells astrologers what themes are active.
How to use your dasha
A dasha does not do anything on its own; it activates what the planet means in your chart: the houses it rules and sits in. A Saturn period asks for discipline and patience, a Venus period brings focus on relationships, comfort and creativity, and a Jupiter period favours learning, growth and guidance. Use the timeline to see which chapter you are in and which is next, then read it with the rest of your chart.
