Frequently asked questions

What is a panchang?

A panchang is the Hindu almanac. Its five limbs (panch-ang) are tithi (lunar day), vaar (weekday), nakshatra (the Moon's star), yoga and karana. It also lists sunrise, sunset, Rahu kaal, Abhijit muhurat and choghadiya.

Why does the panchang change by city?

Sunrise and sunset differ by place, and the timings of Rahu kaal, Abhijit muhurat and choghadiya are all measured from them. Tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana are the same everywhere, but their clock times are shown in your local time.

What is Rahu kaal and should I avoid it?

Rahu kaal is about 90 minutes of each day (one eighth of the daylight) that tradition considers unsuitable for starting new work, travel or purchases. It falls at a different time each weekday.

What is Abhijit muhurat?

Abhijit muhurat is the eighth of fifteen daytime divisions, centred on local noon. It is considered one of the most auspicious windows of the day.

How accurate is this panchang?

It is calculated from the positions of the Sun and Moon with the Lahiri ayanamsa. Times can differ by a few minutes from printed almanacs, which use their own conventions.
