What kundli matching checks
Kundli matching, or Guna Milan, compares the Moon sign and birth star of two people across eight areas called kootas. Each koota carries points, and together they make 36: Varna (1), Vashya (2), Tara (3), Yoni (4), Graha Maitri (5), Gana (6), Bhakoot (7) and Nadi (8).
Varna is about ego and outlook, Vashya about attraction and influence, Tara about health luck, Yoni about intimacy, Graha Maitri about mental wavelength, Gana about temperament, Bhakoot about emotional bond and family welfare, and Nadi about health and genes.
How to read the score
The traditional minimum for a match is 18 out of 36. Scores of 18 to 24 are considered acceptable, 25 to 32 good, and 33 or more excellent. Two koota doshas get special attention: Bhakoot dosha and Nadi dosha, because they carry the most points. Both have classical exceptions, which we flag when they may apply.
Remember that Guna Milan looks only at the two Moon positions. A thorough matching also compares the full charts, the 7th houses, the dashas and Mangal Dosha. Treat the score as a conversation starter, not a verdict; no number can tell you whether two people will be happy together.
About our tables
We use the classical Ashtakoot tables as commonly published. Different almanacs vary slightly on a few half-point values (for example in Vashya and Yoni) and on Gana scoring, so another site may show a score a point or two different. As a sanity check, matching a chart with itself always gives 28 here.
